19 Days Remain in 2024
A Question and an Image to Spark Creativity during the #last100days2024
Welcome to my #last100dayproject!
There are 19 days left in 2024.
Happy Friday the 13th! The number 13 is a lucky one for me.
The Icelandic Yule Lads are starting to show themselves! There are 13 of them. Icelandic culture has some interesting and unique Christmas traditions.
It was so cold yesterday I decided to stay home. I spent most of the day writing and reading in front of the fireplace.
Recommendations:
I took this class last year from TinHouse and enjoyed the content and the instructor!
The story “Angelita Unearthed” from the book The Dangers of Smoking in Bed by Mariana Enriquez is a story that comes to mind periodically. The book was recommended to me by someone I worked with at the Sarah Selecky Writing School. I read this story in the Rise of the Resistance queue at DisneyWorld several years ago when I was there with my son. There are many things that haunt this story and I am compelled to reread it when I feel the pull.
What are stories that pull you back in?
Today’s question: What are you willing to create a partial solution for?
Today’s image:
For the last 100 days, I invite you to join me and experiment.
Each day for the remainder of the year I will share a question and a photo of an item.
You are welcome to write into the question and/or the photo.
Or you can start a new ritual or experiment of your own creation.
I would love to hear about your progress on whatever project you want to begin!
**NOTE**
I do not share drafts of work online because most publications considered this published. You are more than welcome to share your piece in the comments, an excerpt or an update.
I hope for the comments to be a community for us to share these wins.
A little more about me: Tammy L. Evans is a writer, teacher, and coach living in a tiny house on a peninsula with her husband and adventure cat. Her location device is her loud laugh. She is working on a non-fiction book about how to submit and publish your first pieces. She is the creator and host of THE BRADBURY TRIO COURSE. Her poetry has been published in The Storyteller, FoxGlove Journal, Story Hall, Blue Insights, The Partnered Pen, and others. Her fiction has been published in Gone Lawn, Cabinets of Heed, Spelk, Five on the Fifth, Clover and White, Fiction Berlin Kitchen, and others.
Great question!
Yesterday I went to an arts workshop that was in our city's cultural activities list of offerings. It was listed as a mosaics workshop and even though I had my doubts about it because in the photo the project didn't seem to be made of glass or tile. It wasn't clear, however I was curious and I went anyways. We were given sheets of black paper with some butterfly cutouts to use as a tracing template and various bits of paper, some glue and scissors. I was stumped. I actually have all the supplies to make scrappy mosaics which include glass tiles, dishes, tiles and the tools as well. I went thinking it would break the glass for me... It turned out to be the kind of crafty thing that, well, I don't like. So what do I do? I'm drawn to installation art, finely worked furniture building, stuff like that. The snob in me came rising to the surface and I had to do some compromising...(I've been looking into archetypes a lot so I can identify bits of me that I have to keep in line sometimes...)
The problem? The example piece that she had was something that didn't inspire me at all, nor did the materials. So there I was with 15 other women who went to work and made something similar to the example piece. Truly, it was more a collage than a mosaic. I took a look at the recent Collage mazazine to get some inspiration and sat with it for a moment.
Then I started cutting out and piece of iridescent paper into strips then squares choosing the blues and greens. I then covered the surface of the exterior of the butterfly shape in the squares greens to blues, bottom to top.
When I started it felt like a partial solution. It ended up being a lesson about myself and how I approach things. It also felt like I'd made a bit of a self-portrait. Someone said "Clever". It wasn't my intention.
So what else can I finish today that is less than "perfect" that I can accept as good enough?
The partial solution?
No tartar sauce? Love it!
