Bradbury Trio Course 2.0
WHAT HAVE YOU READ THAT RESONATES WITH YOU LATELY? HOW HAS IT CHANGED OR INFLUENCED YOUR WRITING?
Do you know the answers to these questions?
The Bradbury Trio [reading a poem, an essay, and a story every day] fuels my writing and my students’ writing. Ray Bradbury suggested this reading structure as a Do It Yourself MFA. I have adapted it to reach new levels in my writing and felt the need to share it with other writers!
This trio structure works for me because I am inspired to write after I read in new ways.
I have taught writers of all ages for 27 years. Let me show you techniques I use in my writing life to deepen and enrich your practice.
In this 12-week course beginning on January 14, 2024, I will share my personal strategies on how to use reading to influence my writing.
Every writer needs to read. It is a fundamental practice!
This class is like a gathering around a large family table where we and share the bounty of words. We read the same texts and then discuss them.
My students love poetry now when they didn’t have time for it before.
They read more carefully and notice different aspects and share them in the community.
After a week of reading, we write to an assignment to honor that reading and allow our own voice to come through. Sometimes the influence is unconscious and is noticed afterward!
One simple technique I shared was to gather a list of interesting words from your reading and use them as your own prompts. I have several students who do this as a regular practice to fuel their writing. It seems simple until you do it and find how powerful it is!

Tammy is a caring and talented instructor. She curated a wonderful collection of essays, poems, and short fiction stories for her 12-week Bradbury Trio program. I looked forward to each day’s readings and acquired many useful and unique tools to improve my writing. Tammy was organized and quick to respond to questions. She encouraged discussion and reflection through SLACK, a user-friendly platform for class interaction. We learned from each other’s insights and reactions to the reading material. I am excited to participate in more programs taught by Tammy including the next Bradbury Trio course.

The Bradbury Trio with Tammy Evans enriched my writing practice in so many ways. It strengthened my skills at reading like a writer. It broadened my exposure to new authors and literary journals. And, it taught me to pay close attention to what I noticed in the act of reading which lead me to do the same while in the act of writing. I'm so glad I took this course! -Nancy
The BT course has been a game changer for me in my relationship to crafting time for reading in my daily life.
The impact of consistency around reading quality pieces with a certain lens in focus has had a direct impact on the depth of pieces I produced.
This course is a luscious container of supportive community, fostered by passion for learning and delving into the exercises each week. The group’s sharing of insights on pieces they have read, and their assignments, deepened and strengthened my learning experience. There is a wealth of benefits that become available through committing to the process offered in this course. I personally feel that I gained a more rigorous sense of discipline in raising my standards around what I can create in my writing life.
