Thank you for joining me for a coffee and a chat today. The coffee pictured above is morning coffee I am sharing with husband, Chris. I think we are in a hotel in Tennesse somewhere. The coffee was great which is why I took a picture - to remember.
If we were having coffee I would tell you…I started the MFA for All Craft Talks with Lauren Groff this past Thursday. She spoke about fractals and sentences. There were a lot of books recommended throughout the two hours. It has me thinking about long sentences and the intention behind where and how to use them in my writing.
Writing Prompt: Write a story in the form of a reading list.
If we were having coffee I would tell you…breakfast this morning was great except our regular waitress wasn’t there. The hashbrowns were the perfect mix of crunchy and not. The omelet was good too but I kept adding more hot sauce. The company was the best of course.
Writing Prompt: Write about a perfect mix.
If we were having coffee I would tell you… I have been writing a lot of 5 thing essays inspired by Summer Brennan. I have been collecting them in the same doc. I transcribe them from the notebook within a few days so what I don’t write down gets into the draft anyway. I have been calling them ghosts. Those words that I believe are on the page, but in reality are not.
Writing Prompt: What are some the ghosts of your writing?
If we were having coffee I would tell you… I finished Martyr! from Kaveh Akbar. I picked up Kelly Link’s novel at the library and am loving it so far.
But today, I am meeting up with my son and my cousin who is visiting from Germany. I get to meet his daughter too!
Writing Prompt: Write from the POV of several family members.
If we were having coffee I would tell you…my Bradbury Trio course is writing their travel inspired writing this week. I am excited to see what emerges for them. Even though I have taken some big trips in my life I think my draft will be about the writing crawls I have taken myself on around town.
Thank you for joining me for coffee today. If you write to any of the prompts I would love to hear about it. Tag me if you publish it on your Substack!

I’m also doing Summer’s essay workshop and what you said about ghost words resonated with me—the same thing dawned on me as I typed in some drafts! It’s interesting and intriguing to find out what else I have to say lol!
