Thank you for joining me for a coffee and a chat this July Sunday. Let’s pour ourselves a cup from the pot that is hot and ready and begin our conversation!
I am having my normal black coffee today. We went to breakfast early today because my husband had a class he needed to be at by 7:30 am. I had many cups of coffee and am not onto water.
The sun is shining today and it is cooler here. I ran yesterday and it was in the upper 60’s! The humidity was still high but it was a good run.
If we were having coffee I would tell you… I was busy yesterday working on writing residency applications. I sent out two and now there is the waiting game. I am not going to think too much about it now. They are sent off. The questions required me to think more closely about how I write and why. It was a good experience and reflection even if the residencies don’t come through.
If we were having coffee I would tell you…I have been reading and got through The Seven Year Slip in about 24 hours! It was wonderful. Full of magical apartments, books, chefs, and fun! I picked up Lisa See’s new book from the library and spent a good part of the evening reading. It is good, but different than I expected.
If we were having coffee I would tell you…I have been thinking a lot about temporary vs permanence.
Pam Houston, on a podcast, spoke about her $21,000 check from selling her book and wanting to buy something permanent with that money, so she bought a ranch.
In Padrig O’Tuama’s Substack today he posed the question, “What have you done today that sets you in your location, wherever it is, however temporary or permanent it seems?”
The idea of temporary vs permanence always brings me to Alice the Fairy by David Shannon. It is a children’s book I have read to 100’s of children.
My favorite mantra is “Everything is temporary” the good and the bad.
There are things I would like to believe are permanent, but I am not. I am mortal and will die someday. I hope it is many years from now, but that is uncertain. When I was younger and had not lived through the experiences I have, I believed in things being more of the forever variety. Even permanent marker wears off eventually.
The question I pose to you is: Do you believe in permanent?
If we were having coffee I would tell you… speaking of questions some great ones were presented in Cait’s Substack! She asked 38 questions for her birthday. One of the practices she wrote about was writing down the questions she asked herself in her journal over the last year. I thought this was an interesting practice and may write down some from my own notebooks!
What did you write in your notebook today?
If we were having coffee I would tell you… I have been doing Beth Kempton’s (love her books) IG challenge #meetthewriter. You can check out my posts here: https://www.instagram.com/writertammy/ Yesterday the prompt was about champions for your writing. My biggest champion of course is Chris but I do have lots of support around me! When you are on the right path, the universe shows you in lots of ways. I am happy he is back in my life. I am loved…and he is loved back!
If we were having coffee I would tell you… I am teaching a Bradbury Trio course starting August 6. The class will be 12 weeks of curated poems, stories, and essays.
