I attended the Story Studio Chicago Writer Fest this past weekend and met amazing writers on a scale of emerging to bestselling. This event was well-organized, intimate, and full of great sessions and people. The Studio hosts in-person and virtual events. I encourage you to check them out if you are looking for a program. https://www.storystudiochicago.org/
The Bradbury Trio [reading a poem, an essay, and a story every day] fuels my writing.
This trio structure works for me because I am inspired to write after I read.
I hope the reading you do today leads you to writing that could have not been created any other way.
Here are some of the texts that made an impact on me.
Poem: HOWL
I have not read this poem in a long time but was reminded of it by Mona Awad who was the keynote speaker at the fest. Two poems were greatly influential to her writing career. It was the poem that sparked an idea that became her first novel.
Story: Painted Ocean, Painted Ship
This story is written by Rebecca Makkai.
A story about a teacher. This is a topic, although so much a part of my life, I have a hard time writing about in fiction.
Essay: 12 Musings on Time
This essay is from Traci Skuce’s newsletter. The formatting on the doc is a bit strange but scroll down and you will see her collaged essay. It was a great text for me to respond to and make my own collage of time in my notebook.
Have you read anything interesting this week that you need to share!? Please do so in the comments! I love recommendations and have found some of my favorite stories that way.
