I heard another fiction writer talk about how she logs her thoughts about stories she is reading. The question she added which was a surprise to me was, “Why do I think this was published?”
I’m not in the classroom anymore but would be curious what an elementary student would say. I am especially curious about what my kindergarteners would have said if I asked them!
Honestly, I have trouble answering this question which is why I like it!
The Bradbury Trio [reading a poem, an essay, and a story every day] fuels my writing.
This trio structure works for me because I am inspired to write after I read.
I hope the reading you do today leads you to writing that could have not been created any other way.
Here are some of the texts that made an impact on me this week.
Poem: Dream of the Raven Ada Limon
The scene of this poem intrigues me. I like how it begins with the bicycle image. I am transported to the setting here with her words.
Story: The Bowl by Aimee Bender from the collection The Girl in the Flammable Skirt
I love Bender’s imagination and have been fortunate enough to take a class with her. I love a story that centers around an object.
Essay: On The Tricky Art of Turning Truth Into Fiction Lit Hub
This essay is timely for me. I am in a course called, “Ease into Fiction” and it is top of mind for me.
Have you read anything interesting this week that you need to share!? Please do so in the comments! I love recommendations and have found some of my favorite stories that way.
A little more about me: Tammy L. Evans is a writer, teacher, and coach living in a tiny house on a peninsula with her husband and adventure cat. Her location device is her loud laugh. She is currently working on a short story collection. Her poetry has been published in The Storyteller, FoxGlove Journal, Story Hall, Blue Insights, The Partnered Pen, and others. Her fiction has been published in Gone Lawn, Cabinets of Heed, Spelk, Five on the Fifth, Clover and White, Fiction Berlin Kitchen, and others.
I had never heard of the Bradbury Trio, now I am obsessed! This week, I read the new picture book of Joy Harjo's poem "Remember", illustrated by Michaela Goade. It is beautiful.
I’ll try to put the Bradbury trio into practice!
