I just returned from a trip to Iceland and one of the tasks was to decide what books to take with me. The flight out of O’hare is not terribly long (5-6 hours depending on direction) but I cannot access my Hoopla app on flight mode. I can access one book on the Kindle app. I didn’t want to take physical books I would never open. I was trying to pack light this time.
How do you decide what books to take with you on a trip?
I had a library e-book of One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle which I enjoyed immensely that I read on the way back to Chicago. I took a Paris Review issue but barely cracked it open. I did read more of Index Cards by Moyra Davis on the overnight flight.
One friend asked me to send her the list of books I decided to take when I was at the airport because she knew I would change them so many times!
I often will write on the plane as well. This trip I did watch some movies and tv shows which passed the time nicely.
Sometimes it works out that I take the perfect book to read and it fuels my writing. I would love to hear how it works out for you!
The Bradbury Trio [reading a poem, an essay, and a story daily] fuels my writing.
This trio structure inspires me to write after I read.
Good Words In = Good Words Out
My wish is for your reading to engage you in a way that leads to new writing!
Poem: "For Calling the Spirit Back from Wandering the Earth in Its Human Feet," by Joy Harjo
Story: How to Eat a Spider
Essay: What Makes a Really Good Hotel?
This piece is part written essay and part photo essay - I find this format and piece intriguing.
Prompt: Take sparkly bits from each piece and see how they go together into a new piece.
Happy Llama Tuesday!
If you like this concept and it fuels you I invite you to join me for 4 weeks of the Bradbury Trio Course! There are a few more spots available!

Iceland! When I went to Dublin in 2023, our layover was in Iceland and I desperately wanted to go out and explore. I hope it was everything you hoped for! I'd love to hear more about it!
