Today is the day I put a note in my calendar, “Pack and Pile”. When I travel, I start a pile of things I want to take and then pack the suitcase the day before. This allows me to wander around thinking about what I want to take without having to repack everything. It also allows me to swap things that I decide I do not need. I try to pack ahead of time and always end up dumping it out! Everything is a process.
I have tried to pack more minimally lately and in a way that makes sense for that trip. I typically am not an overpacker. Lately, I have underestimated the temperature of a place and needed one more sweatshirt (even in Mexico). I read an article about a woman who thrifts on her vacations and swaps out clothes for the new ones. It is an interesting concept that keeps coming to mind.
This packing process reminds me of an essay I read months ago - Who Taught You How to Pack. I cannot find the exact article but it did lead me down a rabbit hole of other articles about how to properly pack a suitcase and who you learn it from. There are loads of people who make IG videos about it. It is a subculture all its own!
