What’s in your wallet?
Start with a list of what is in your purse, bag or wallet. What do the contents tell about you or a character? Are there pens, books, Happy Meal toys, rocks, emergency ketchup? List it all.
This exercise works with shopping carts as well. There is nothing I like better while standing in line at the grocery store then to make up stories about the cart contents of the people around me. I once saw a woman buy 5 bunches of bananas and salt.
Starting a story with an unusual list can draw your reader in. A personal list is a way to draw yourself in!
