I don’t have a favorite fairy tale because I love so many of them. “The Little Match Girl” is the one fairy tale that brings tears to my eyes every time I read it. Hans Christaian Andersen’s tale of a little girl who freezes to death with a smile on her face still affects me deeply. The injustice of the tale and the unnecessary death of the girl on New Year’s Eve, while all around her people are celebrating and ignoring the fact that she needs help—that really gets me every time.

I would have a meal with her in a warm place, making sure she gets to eat and to live. Simple and healthy food. And not just one meal either. We’d eat and chat about all her happy memories and make plans to add to those memories. A whole bright and happy future mapped out for her over dinner, surrounded by family and friends.
