For 26 years, my focus was the education of children. Over the years, especially in kindergarten, I have collected snippets of conversation and observations from students.
I am fascinated by the way students see the world and reflect on it. I do miss conversations with 5 and 6 year olds from my teaching days.
Here are some phrases students have said to me:
You wore your legs today (When the student told me this, I was wearing a black and white dress with gray heels)
The sky is clean. (No clouds)
Breath is the wind of my mouth.
I wish it would rain bubblegum.
If I tell anyone else I’m an alien, they would panic.
Happy Friday!
When I read this brilliance out of the mouths of children, it is so humbling. Why do I even write?
I love the way kids talk! My wife (a private tutor) was teaching creative writing to one of her younger students, and I heard her down the hall telling the little boy about me, "You know, my husband's a writer," and the kid goes, "Oh, is he published?" ; )
How delightful! When we, as adults tap into that part of us, we can sweep away so much pressure to be other than our basic natures and the "I am adult" expectations that can keep us learning newnesses. (Talking to myself here...)
